Summer 2003
SUMMER, 2003 Website: http://www.charlestonbar.org FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues: By the time you read this, it will be after July 4th. I hope that all have had a safe holiday and an enjoyable summer vacation so far. Since my last letter to the Bar, retired Probate Judge Gus Pearlman has passed away, and the legacy that he left behind as a probate judge, as a lawyer, and as a gentleman are all in our thoughts. Judge Pearlman will always be remembered as an outstanding example of judicial conduct. There are many things to report. My classmate, Circuit Court Judge Victor Rawl, has now retired. Rumor has it that he will come back to be a “part time” judge after he and Laura travel through Australia and New Zealand. I have never known Vic to do anything “part time,” so I know that we can look forward to seeing him on a regular basis. We are fortunate that former Master-in-Equity Roger Young has now been seated as our new Circuit Court judge. Roger held a lot of non-jury Common Pleas court and has years of experience as Master-in-Equity, so he comes to the Circuit Court bench with a great deal of experience. I know that all who have appeared before Judge Young have a great deal of respect for him, his abilities and his temperament. Mikell Scarborough has been elected by the General Assembly to take the seat as Master-in-Equity for Charleston County, and I know that we all welcome him and look forward to appearing before him. Mikell is also blessed with good skills and a good temperament, and I know that he will be a real asset to the bench, the bar and the citizens of our county. We now have a Probate Court Liaison Committee. The members of that committee will be working with Judge Irvin Condon to address the smooth functioning of that court. I know that many have commented on what a great system it is. At the last meeting of the County Bar Executive Committee, a resolution was passed commending and honoring Jerry Kaynard for his dedicated work with the Neighborhood Legal Assistance Program, from its founding in the 1970s all the way to the present. Without Jerry’s tireless efforts, and his leadership, the Neighborhood Legal Assistance Program would never have been able to achieve what it did: helping to make civil justice accessible to the poor. Jerry, we all thank you. Finally, I once again want to thank Mark Joye for the wonderful job he is doing with the Bar website. I do not know if you have visited it lately, but it is at www.charlestonbar.org. There you can find this newsletter, past newsletters, and access to a list of all of the members of the Charleston County Bar, with their contact information and the photographs of many. Mark Joye has entered a contract with Furchgott Studios and you can have your photograph taken there for posting on the website for FREE. Additional information is included in this newsletter. Mark, thank you so much for all of your hard work on this project. Remember, the Executive Committee meets the second Thursday in each month at 8:00 a.m., at my office. All members are welcome. To all, have a great summer. Sincerely, Mark C. Tanenbaum * * * * Office Space for Rent: Office space for one attorney and one support staff in West Ashley. Parking at the door included. Call T. O. If you have not responded to this letter, please do so as soon as possible. * * * * Dear Charleston County Bar Member: Re: Charleston County Bar Photos for Website We have revamped the Charleston County Bar Association’s website. I invite you to visit it at www.charlestonbar.org to explore its many capabilities. As you will see, on the website, we have incorporated the Charleston County Legal Directory, which contains photographs and contact information for members of the Charleston County Bar Association who are current on their dues. We will no longer carry a print version of this directory so I encourage you to view this directory and review the photo and contact information about yourself for any changes that you may wish to add. We have retained the professional services of Gene Furchgott with Furchgott Studios to take photographs of current bar members for use in this directory on our website. There is no charge to bar members to have their photo taken for the website. Please call Furchgott Studios at 843-556-6800 to arrange a date and time to do so. We have contracted with Mr. Furchgott for a limited amount of time for these photographs. The studio is located at 825-B Savannah Highway which is near Gerald’s Tires, the Liberty Café and Hokus Pokus. When you arrive there, please fill out the attached Information Form with your name, firm name, mailing address, telephone number, fax number, email address, and website address. This information, along with the photograph, will be posted to the website. Should you decide to submit your own photograph, we need a photograph no smaller than 2”x3” width and height. You should fill out the attached Information Form, attach the photograph, and mail it to: Charleston County Bar Association P.O. Box 21136 Charleston, SC 29413 If you are unsure whether you are current with your association dues and want to check on this to ensure your inclusion within the directory, you may call Julianne Kemp at 843-881-3123 for that information. If you have any additional questions about this directory or the website in general, you may call me at 843-554-3100. We are very excited about our new website and look forward to having this legal directory up and running very shortly. Sincerely, Mark C.
